Bacterial Vaginosis

?

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the vagina's natural bacteria. Although it doesn't always have symptoms, it can cause discomfort such as a strong-smelling discharge, itching, or irritation.

Causes
Under normal conditions, the vagina maintains a healthy balance between “good” and “bad” bacteria. When this balance is disturbed, harmful bacteria can overgrow and cause infection.

The most common causes are:
• Having multiple sexual partners
• Vaginal douches
• Use of perfumed products
• Hormonal changes
• Antibiotic use
• Lack of lactobacilli (good bacteria)

Can it be treated?
Bacterial Vaginosis can be effectively treated with prescription antibiotics. At Dzeus, we offer online medical consultations with licensed professionals who will evaluate you and, if necessary, prescribe treatment quickly and discreetly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is it different from a fungal infection?

Unlike candidiasis (fungi), BV doesn't cause thick discharge or severe itching. In addition, BV usually has a stronger characteristic odor, while fungal infections do not.

What are the causes or risk factors?

BV is not a sexually transmitted infection, but it is more common in people who are sexually active. Risk factors include:

  • Having multiple sexual partners

  • Frequent vaginal douching

  • Use of irritating or perfumed products in the intimate area

How is it diagnosed?

At Dzeus Health, the diagnosis is made through a clinical evaluation, including medical history, symptoms and a physical exam. Sometimes a sample of the flow is taken to confirm the presence of bacterial imbalance.

Can BV reappear?

Yes. About 1 in 3 women may have a recurrence weeks or months after treatment. If this is your case, it's important to talk to a doctor to review other management options.

What happens if it's not treated?

If left untreated, BV can increase the risk of sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy complications (such as premature birth), and pelvic infections following gynecological procedures.

Can I have sex during treatment?

It is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse during treatment so as not to aggravate symptoms or interfere with recovery. In addition, some antibiotic creams can weaken latex condoms.
